AdBlue is a trademark by Verband der Automobilindustrie e.V. (VDA) licensed to Blue Chem.

AdBlue® is a chemical product, complementary to fuel, which shall be used in diesel vehicles equipped with SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology. It is an aqueous solution made of high-purity urea.
AdBlue® is a non-toxic and environmental-friendly product as it actively contributes for a reduction of polluted gases that increase the greenhouse effect, transforming nitrogen oxides in natural air components (elementary nitrogen and steam).

The main characteristics present in AdBlue® are:
It is an aqueous solution comprising urea and demineralised water;
It is a colourless and odourless liquid;
Its melting point is -11ºC;
Its pH is approximately 9,5;
It is neither flammable nor explosive;
It is not classified as a dangerous substance, neither for people nor for the environment.

AdBlue® may be purchased directly at Blue Chem or through our network of authorised resellers.

What you can do
Use materials which are approved, clean and recommended for AdBlue®. The 100% stainless steel 316 Tiand the HDPE are recommended materials. It is advisable to avoid the contact between AdBlue® and copper, zinc, aluminum and normal steel materials, otherwise there is the risk of deterioration of the product’s quality and problems may arise in the catalyst and other equipment.
Protect AdBlue® from all contamination with fuel, oil, water, dust, dirt, metals, detergent, etc.
Store AdBlue® at temperatures between 30 ºC and -11 ºC.
Use AdBlue® exclusively according to the standards DIN 70070 and ISO 22241-1.
What you cannot do
--> Do not use AdBlue® as an additive for diesel;
--> Do not pour AdBlue® in the fuel tank;
--> Do not operate without AdBlue®;
--> Do not refill used AdBlue® containers without prior certified cleaning;
--> Do not storage AdBlue® under direct sun light;
--> Do not allow any contact between AdBlue® and any other substance or material other than 100% stainless steel 316 Ti and HDPE (High-density polyethylene).
Quality and Safety
Quality is the most striking feature of the AdBlue® commercialised by Blue Chem. In fact, we produce a product of an extraordinary purity, acknowledged as the best in the Market, totally in line with the regulations in force; prior to be made available to our Clients, AdBlue® undergoes a thorough quality control performed regularly in our own laboratory and in independent laboratories.
Relevant standards on AdBlue® and urea:
- ISO 22241-1: Quality requirements;
- ISO 22241-2: Testing methods;
- ISO/DIS 22241-3: Transport and storage handling;
- ISO/DIS 22241-4: Refilling interface;
- ISO 9001: 2008;
- DIN 70070;

Frequently asked questions
Will I have to use AdBlue®? Why?
All heavy vehicles with diesel engines registered from the 1st October 2006 onwards have to comply with the norm Euro 4 regarding exhaust emissions. So to comply with the environmental standards Euro 4 and Euro 5 (more recent) on trucks’ exhaust emissions, the vast majority of the manufacturers chose the SCR technology which requires the use of an aqueous urea solution 32,5%.
Although there is an alternative technology, EGR leads to an increase in diesel consumption, so itis noticeable that most manufacturers chose for SCR and from the 1st of January 2015 onwards (when the Euro 6 standard will come into force) all will have to use it. In the United States the EPA 2010 standard also leads to the use of the SCR technology.

What is the SCR Technology (selective catalytic reduction)?
The SCR technologyreduces the diesel engines emissions because when the nitrogen oxides (NOx) go through the exhaust system, they blend with AdBlue® and transform themselves in nitrogen and steam (which are natural air components) given a catalytic reaction boosted by heat.

What is the expiration date for AdBlue®?
It is operational for approximately 1 year, as long as it is stored at a temperature between -11ºC and 30ºC, and provided that its long-term exposure to different weather conditions – particularly the sun – is avoided.
AdBlue® may freeze if the temperature is below -11°C; nevertheless, it does not suffer any damage during the freezing process and once it gets back to the original status, the solution will regain its concentration and quality. The quantity of urea included may reduce if AdBlue® is kept at temperatures above 30°C and, in this case, there is also the possibility to form ammoniac.

Is AdBlue® an additive for diesel?
No. It has a separate system that never gets in touch with diesel.

What are AdBlue® consumption levels?
On average, the consumption of AdBlue® is around 1,5 litres per 100 km (driving on motorways).

What is the Law Euro 4, Euro 5 and Euro 6?
Legislation that makes it compulsory for diesel vehicles to reduce the engine emissions.
Euro 4 standard came into force on the 1st October 2006.
Euro 5 standard came into force on the 1st October 2009.
Euro 6 standard will come into force on the 1stJanuary 2015.
